Expired Film with Hasselblad 500c

I’ve got a Hasselblad on loan from my pal Kev. I also got a hold of some expired film, so was keen to get through it.

I took a walk in Glasgow, and got through a roll of Portra 400.

I know with shots like this a lot of photographers tend to wait for a single person to enter the frame to add some scale, but I like waiting for the emptiness.

There must have been a conference on or something at the SECC because people were trickling through endlessly. Honestly, I can’t even tell you how long I stood waiting to take what turned out to be a totally unremarkable photo.

Gotta just love that process, though

Jokes aside, I love the feeling of being out with a new camera. Seeing the same spots from different perspectives and aspect ratios.

That was it. First roll down. Time to load the Portra 800.

I had plans to shoot the Ektar first thing in the morning, so had hoped to blitz through the Portra 800 on my way home, though nothing else caught my eye before getting picked up.

I fired off a few frames of our livingroom since Robyn has decorated it for Halloween, and also a couple dog portraits.

Anyway, where has this all come from?

Well, I've been feeling the urge for a medium format camera recently, and have already decided that if I do MF, then it has to be film as I don't want anything larger than my current full frame set up with digital bodies.

I didn’t finish the roll, so the following morning I fired off 3 shots of the same scene. This was predominantly so I could get a shift on with the Portra, the Ektar was calling me.

The second of those 3 is my favourite, I think (larger, below).

I prefer how the cloud cover sits with the moon in the third frame, but the subtle addition of some movement/life with the birds in the second gives it the edge for me.

For the last frame, the sky lit up from the sunrise and there was subtle shades of pink breaking through. This is emphasised somewhat with the film.

Montgomery Road, Paisley || Kodak Portra 800 (expired)

That was the last frame of the Portra 800.

The shot of the towerblocks/goal post was the shot I wanted from the morning, but the pinker scene from just behind those flats wound up being my favourite.

I feel like I didn't truly realise the difference while I was shooting, but the light changed dramatically in those 20 minutes.

I loaded the Ektar and walked up the road, looking back toward the same block of flats and the light altered drastically again:

And that was it, home time.

There’s a wee video on YouTube from the morning shoot in Paisley.
