Laura & Jeffels visit Glasgow

The last time Jeffels was in Glasgow we were living together in a flat, until the dodgy dealings between our letting agents at Countrywide and the (at the time, unregistered) Landlord’s resulted in us being evicting to cover their backs.

Fast forward a year and a bit and looking back it’s probably for the best it happened. I mean, being made homeless wasn’t exactly ideal but Jeffels returned to York and shortly after met Laura, and I went off and did my own thing until I was able to get myself sorted in another flat. Gotta just deal with it and keep yourself occupied.

Laura & Jeffels arrived on the Friday evening which meant a few quick drinks at mine before heading straight out to Catty.

Sarah & Katie’s Wedding, York

I’ve been to few weddings, and aren’t mad keen on the idea of them in general which is less to do with the folk getting married, and more just the that I’m not a fan of the whole faff of it all.

This wasn’t a faff though, and when Sarah casually invited me over Messenger and pitched it as a big party, it sounded fun and I said I’d be there.

I stayed in York with Jeffels & Laura and we arrived early to help set up. Sarah & Katie assembled a band so they could play their own party. I got to fill in on bass during the soundcheck which I think is the first time I’d played music with Sarah since we were back in School.

A free bar, & fairy lights everywhere.

Riding Elevators

Occasionally I’ll poke around my archive and notice a pattern in photos, and for a while I’ve been meaning to post a collection of elevator selfies.

A few of my favourite films have memorable elevator scenes (Die Hard, Terminator 2, Vanilla Sky), and so I guess this is where the fascination comes from.

I’m not that big on my own photo being taken, but I’m partial to the occasional selfie. Maybe there’s a comfort in having a camera covering half yer face? I dunno. Either way, here’s a few I’ve taken solo or with people on my journeys back in 2017.

And before you ask, yeah I pretty much wear the same thing every day of the year.

First week back in Scarborough!

I haven’t posted since I’ve moved back to Scarborough, and I’ve already done a few different things so figured I’d condense it into one long post rather than a few small ones which I know I’d never get around to doing.

It’s always strange being back in Scarborough, but some things never change and the locals still amaze me.

Martyn & Rebecca’s Wedding, Whitley Hall Hotel

Last Saturday, Martyn & Rebecca got married.

I’d visited Jazz in Liverpool for a couple of days prior (that’s another blog for another day), and arranged to get the train to Sheffield on Friday evening to avoid the inevitable stress of travelling through the morning of the wedding.

The trains were delayed, and I arrived far later than I’d have liked at the hostel I booked that day. I went straight to bed, though ended up crashing next to some guy who was fresh from filming for the Jeremy Kyle Show. He celebrated his victory on passing the lie detector test by offering me a joint, but I just wanted to sleep so I passed and got some rest.

I was up at 6am, expecting to avoid other folk in the hostel as I doubled checked my bags before my Uber arrived. I went into the kitchen and was greeted by a pissed Glaswegian who was watching rugby with a crate of lager. He took great pride in telling me about how he has the exact same TV the hostel has, but it only cost him £20 and “it’s not even stollen!”, oh, and his remote – “it’s not one of them all-in-ones, it’s for the actual telly. Goes like the clappers it does. The remote retails at £30, an’ I got the lot for £20!”. I wished him well and left him to his beers.

The uber driver told me I was his last ride, ending his 18 hour shift, and almost veered off the road after hitting some ice while showing me photos he’d taken of snow using his phone. Excellent start to the day.

I’ve known Martyn now for just over a decade, having gone through college and university together while in bands. Since the band stopped and with us all living in different towns/cities, we rarely get the chance to hang out these days. I’ve only really met Rebecca a handful of times, and she’s genuinely wonderful and the two of them just work. So yeah, it was pretty wild witnessing the two get married with the kids running about.

Even though I’m approaching 31, marriage still ain’t on my life-radar and when pals get married it really hammers it home that folks are becoming more settled and family oriented. It’s a trip.

I rarely photograph weddings, but I’d been looking forward to this one for a while. Hanging out with friends while being trusted to do my thing made the whole process comfortable, and actually left me wanting to photograph more. I was shooting from 8am to 10pm, so the following photos are a selection of highlights from the day.

“Disco Tits”

I think it was around April I got a message from Jazz. Her living situation had just taken a drastic change, “can I come crash for a bit?”. Straight off the bat I knew it was gonna be more than a bit, but I’ll admit that even I didn’t expect it to turn into a full six month stint.

Me and Jeffels are quiet types, and Jazz has energy for more than the both of us. Though this always made trips to the Cathouse extra fun.

The Hunters.

I was originally planning on heading back to Glasgow on Wednesday, but Iain informed me of Jeanna’s birthday being on the Thursday and that she wanted to go to Go Ape. As I couldn’t afford the full return journey again so soon, I opted to stay a few extra nights because I wanted to throw myself out of trees and also didn’t want to miss his surprise proposal to Jeanna on the evening that he’d been planning online in a secret group chat for what feels like forever.

We arrived and all signed the necessary forms to clear Go Ape in the event of our deaths and headed through training.

I was taking around a little palm-sized video camera that I looped around my neck, but opted to leave my camera in the capable hands of Grace, as she came along to walk around and watch us from below.

I legit want to wear this harness everywhere I go – I felt prepared for anything.
