49 SECONDS: A SHED SEVEN Music Video

30 weeks ago a friend gave me an old video camera and it was small and fit in my pocket and also claimed to be virtually indestructible so I figured I’d take it with me everywhere. I decided to document 7 seconds a day for a week to see how it all looked in one 49 second video.

The clips were kinda erratic, but I also kinda dug it and figured that 49 second bursts wasn’t too intense, so I made it a weekly thing.

When I watch them back I can spot little arcs of things that were going on in my life:

My routine of ending up in Catty on a weekend, friends getting married, how little my band actually rehearses, brief awkward spells of dating, the ridiculous amount of commutes I was doing between being evicted from my flat and the 3 months of couch surfing while I tried (and failed) to find somewhere else to live… all the while documenting the adventures I was on with Jazz as our relationship progressed and took off, and everything that came along after it.

I didn’t particularly concern myself about an audience or even think about who might be watching it, so it was kinda mad to receive a call from Paul Banks saying he’d been watching my videos and wondered how I’d feel about using the stuff that mostly focused on Jazz and myself being put together for a music video, if I had all the footage still.

I was way too interested and curious about how it would look myself so just agreed on the spot without really considering how mental it would be essentially putting my own memories into a whole new context for the public to view. Funnily enough, it ended up being pretty challenging.

A few things were established early on, like using slightly lengthier clips to not mentally exhaust viewers for one, and other shit like changing up the aspect ratio and I guess other boring technicalities which I’m sure isn’t interesting to most people so I will stop.

To be honest I’m real fucking proud of this, and the song is stuck in my head right now so I hope you dig that to. It was cool to be able to work on this for the couple of weeks I had to turn it around, and aside from a couple of last minute alterations that needed to be made in order to keep it PG, the whole process was seamless.

So yeah, Victoria is a single from Shed Seven‘s latest album Instant Pleasures and the music video is littered with my ugly mug. Do enjoy.

Waking up with JAZZebell_ (video)

A few days ago I edited together a video that I shot of Jazz like 10 months ago.

The footage has been stored on my hdd ever since we shot it and I just never got around to putting it together for whatever reason. I get the impression Jazz wants to film a ton more stuff so I guess this won’t be the last of these you see, and I hope to get them done much sooner than every ten months.

It was pretty trippy putting it together and watching it back. We filmed it in my old bedroom in Glasgow and it brought back like a million memories.

This is also my first time putting a video like this together so I hope you dig it. If you don’t then at least it’s only 3.5 minutes you wasted and there’s not much I can do about that.

I want to film more stuff like this, and I’m pleased to say a few people I’ve photographed before are into it so I’m hoping it all goes to plan. Also, if you yourself want something like this doing just drop me a message, I’m sure we can figure it out!

Crashing Drones with Sarah

Yesterday I headed back into Scarborough to meet Sarah and we actually filmed content for a video she wanted making and some of the footage I was able to use to make a pretty dumb vlog with for my YouTube channel so you can view that at the bottom of this post.

I was also supposed to meet up with Robyn again and we were gonna go for another dog walk but she was called into work and by the time she’d finished the tide was well in so I think we’re gonna do something on Saturday instead.

Yay Coffee was our first stop, for a couple of drinks and to assemble the drone.

49 SECONDS: Episode 1.

Last week, a friend passed on to me a palm-sized camera. It’s an old and small waterproof, bombproof Fuji thing. As it slides into my pocket I felt compelled to carry it everywhere and it turns out that recording with it is straight forward and it kicks out enough pixels to be usable.

A while ago I started a vlog on my YouTube channel and I’ve got a bunch of content to catch up with but I want to do something that feels effortless to keep regular content on the go, so I decided to allow myself to film 7 seconds of video a day. Over 7 days that’s 49 seconds of video… so until I have a better idea, forget, get bored, or die, there’ll be one episode a week uploading to my channel.

Here’s a couple of snapshots that I particularly like.

Shout out to my pal Dave who I uploaded something not too dissimilar to this from his trip to Germany. As soon as I got this camera in my hand his video sprung to mind.

It’s fast, but not *too* fast. There’s a bunch to take in, and I think it flows in an interesting way. I’ve already managed to capture my best buddy proposing to his lass, so I feel it’s gonna be interesting to look back on whatever snapshots I choose later down the line.
