Party Photos with Sigma 10-20mm

I almost had a sober night last night, I had about 3 or 4 pints of water and then around 1am Alix set me off and gave me a sip of her vodka and then bought me a double and then the next thing I know I was buying drinks and on a level I didn’t expect to be on.

As mentioned in my last post, due to it being way cheaper I’m using a lens made for crop sensor body on my full frame D610, so the lens vignettes pretty heavily at 10-13, but about 14mm the vignette is almost gone and what’s left is pretty much the equivalent of shooting a 20mm lens.

I’ve wanted a 20mm lens for club work for a while, but always got by with my 24. The extra room actually makes a massive difference when shooting groups of people on a packed dance floor, that and when shooting just one or two people, the extra ambient light the lens lets in is just way more pleasing to my eye.

The lens can distort like crazy around the edges but also we’re looking at party photos of drunk people so you really shouldn’t give a shit about that.

The comfort of being a drunk party photographer

For a few months I’d been feeling like my photos are mostly shit, and that was down to feeling less connected with whatever was going on around me, and with my anxiety, and the realisation of that anxiety being an actual thing that I needed to deal with.

Since almost the beginning of August I stopped myself drinking anything but water for a solid month. I was curious to see if it’d make me feel any different. I missed tea, a lot (I now have an occasional cup of tea, like once a week maybe?), drinking water was and still is boring, but aside from that it was fine – In fact it’s generally done me a ton of good; my moods are more manageable, I’m less irritable, more rational, I don’t really mind getting out of bed early, and I don’t ache anymore. The only problem being when I was out, I missed alcohol.

It’s easy to think that shooting club nights are just the same night repeated drink after drink, but when they come into their own it’s hard to explain, especially to those who don’t do it. I can look back at certain photos from different nights and remember entire stories of situations that happened on each particular night. Since allowing myself to drink once a week, coinciding wonderfully with me taking party photos and finding a balance and purpose within that chaos, that’s what the past few weeks have been feeling like and that’s what I’ve been missing from my life recently. I feel it coming back and it’s familiar and comforting, and I fucking love it. Looking at some of my party photos, especially recently, I’m feeling good about my photos again.

I’m an anti-social fuck at the best of times, so I need to focus on getting out a little more to surround myself with familiar drunken faces and have a goddamn dance because if everything is as shit as we believe then we may as well feel good about it together.

Shooting Nightclubs with Fuji X-Pro2: Part 1

I’ve been toying with the idea of down-sizing my set-up for club photos for a while. I guess mostly out of curiosity as I love my X-Pro2 and with the Nissin i40 flash gun and 18mm f2 lens it weighs in considerably less than my current Nikon D610.

Last night was my first night with it (I shot half with the X-Pro2, and half with the Nikon for piece of mind) but tonight I’ll be relying solely on the X-Pro2 so I’ll probably post a more in-depth blog about my thoughts on it tomorrow or something.

Here’s a few photos from the Fuji last night.

Katy & Nicola’s Flat Party and Cathouse

Last night I headed to Katy & Nicola’s new place for a few drinks. I was already rough as shit and wasn’t expecting to head out into Catty again, but then the shots and venom were handed out and basically I didn’t go home when I’d planned.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday have essentially been massive write-offs for me and I’m likely gonna be laying on my sofa recovering for the next day or so.

I try not to post too much nightlife stuff on this blog because that’s what Who Are These Fucking People is for but as these aren’t ‘work’ photos, and I was just hanging with friends and making the most of the 0.95 manual focus lens my pal Stephen has lent me for a wee bit, and I figured I’d share them because considering my state I’m quite into the photos.

So here they are.

Scarborough: Por Favor

I’ve a little catching up to do, so this is my first post of three from my time in Scarborough a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve entered a bit of a lull with party photos lately. I think the fact I’ve stopped drinking so much has become a huge part of that, and when you go at things with a more sober and ‘professional’ mindset, it gets stale real goddamn fast from my perspective.

I’m definitely due a blow out, I think…

That said, just over a month ago a friend of a friend got in touch with me about heading down to Scarborough to shoot a night they were putting on in a Brewery. It’s been a while since I’ve shot anything other than a rock club, so I jumped at the chance to do something a little different and arguably out of my comfort zone. Even if it did technically mean travelling to another country.

My history within Scarborough’s nightlife scene undoubtedly riles some people up the wrong way, and in all honesty I know a lot of the people who’d quite enjoy seeing me put into hospital would be into this particular event. Continue reading “Scarborough: Por Favor”

Back to the Cathouse

I’d taken a bunch of time off from shooting nightlife due to an unexpected spike in anxiety and depression, and last night marked my first proper night back at the Cathouse in just over a month.

Since I’ve started shooting some loose video blogs for my YouTube channel I thought I’d shoot a bit of content for it.

It was good to be back and be surrounded with a bunch of familiar faces. After the first few drinks it was business as usual, and I’m hoping to get into a good routine with it again.
